Ten Broeck Hospital offers a highly structured Child Psychiatric
Inpatient Program that utilizes the Medical Model of Treatment for
treating children (ages 3 to 12) who are experiencing problems with
psychiatric illnesses and/or emotional disorders. This program is
designed to provide the highest level of direct patient care that
is possible which includes physical, social, spiritual, medical and
psychotherapeutic treatment interventions.
The Child Psychiatric Inpatient
Program
- A safe milieu with 24 hour skilled nursing care.
- Thorough assessment by a registered nurse and development of an
Initial Treatment Plan.
- Evaluation and crisis stabilization by a multidisciplinary team
(including a nurse, social worker, activity therapist, occupational
therapist, special education teacher, pediatrician, dietitian, and
psychologist) directed by a child psychiatrist.
- Psychiatric evaluation by a psychiatrist.
- Physical examination and intervention by a physician.
- Pharmacological interventions as indicated.
- Development of a Master Treatment Plan by a multidisciplinary
team which is problem oriented, goal directed, contains measurable
objectives, and addresses criteria for discharge.
- Development of a comprehensive discharge plan.
- A color privilege system that is designed to match the
responsibilities and privileges available to a patient with the
level of progress shown in the treatment program. The color
privilege system is a form of therapeutic levels defining
privileges earned by a child each day for the child's efforts to be
responsible, respectful of others, treatment focused and compliant
with directions.
- Therapy groups that include focus groups, dealing with issues
related to grief and loss, nutrition, children of alcoholic
parents, biofeedback, drug education, feelings, problem solving,
sexual abuse, self awareness and others as indicated.
- Individual psychotherapy with a qualified child
psychiatrist.
- Family participation in treatment which includes family therapy
and educational groups.
- Educational needs and priorities for each patient are assessed
and those needs are responded to through an individualized program
of instruction developed by a special education teacher.
Following completion of the Child Psychiatric Inpatient Program,
an appropriate referral is then made for the patient to continue
treatment in the least restrictive level of care possible (i.e.,
partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, outpat ent,
aftercare programs). The level of care recommended is determined by
the individual needs of the patient.
