Extended Care Program for Adolescents

Ten Broeck Hospital offers a highly structured, long-term Extended Care programs that utilizes a multi-disciplinary treatment model. These programs are designed for male and female adolescents, 13 to 18 years of age, who require long-term intervention services with specialized therapeutic attention given to emotional, behavioral and psychiatric issues.

The Extended Care programs provide a safe, secure setting with the highest quality of direct patient care. Males and females reside on separate units and typically stay in the Program for 2 to 6 months. This Program is specifically designed for the challenging adolescent who has previously been treated in acute care settings but continues to exhibit dysfunctional behavior patterns.

Adolescent Extended Care Program

  • Safe milieu with 24-hour skilled nursing care;
  • Thorough evaluation by a multidisciplinary team (nurse, social worker, activity therapist, special education teacher, pediatrician, dietitian, and psychologist);
  • Psychiatric evaluation by an adolescent psychiatrist;
  • Pharmacological intervention as indicated;
  • Comprehensive Discharge Plan with specific aftercare arrangements;
  • A behavioral reinforcement system that is designed to correspond to the patient's progress in treatment;
  • Group therapy and psycho-education groups dealing with issues related to grief and loss, children of alcoholic parents, drug education, anger management, problem solving, sexual abuse, self awareness, and others as indicated;
  • Individual psychotherapy with an adolescent psychiatrist;
  • Family therapy and family education groups;
  • School, with individualized academics provided by special education teachers.
  • Chemical Dependency Group for patients with identified chemical dependency issues.

Payor sources typically appropriate for this level of treatment are:

  • EPSDT, Special Services (KY Medicaid)
  • Third Party Insurance / Managed Care
  • County Contracts (Indiana IV-E approved)
