Ten Broeck Hospital offers a highly structured Adolescent
Psychiatric Inpatient Program that utilizes the Medical Model of
Treatment for treating adolescents (ages 12 to 18) who are
experiencing problems with psychiatric illnesses and/or emotional
disorders. This program is designed to provide the highest level of
direct patient care that is possible which includes physical,
social, spiritual, medical and psychotherapeutic treatment
interventions.
The Adolescent Psychiatric
Inpatient Program
- A safe milieu with 24 hour skilled nursing care.
- Thorough assessment by a registered nurse and development of an
Initial Treatment Plan.
- Evaluation and crisis stabilization by a multidisciplinary team
(including a nurse, social worker, activity therapist, expressive
therapist, special education teacher and psychologist) directed by
a psychiatrist.
- Psychiatric evaluation by a psychiatrist.
- Physical examination and intervention by a physician.
- Pharmacological interventions as indicated.
- Development of a Master Treatment Plan by a multidisciplinary
team which is problem oriented, goal directed, contains measurable
objectives, and addresses criteria for discharge.
- Development of a comprehensive discharge plan.
- A highly structured behavior modification program, that
provides a level system as a method for facilitating increased
individual responsibility for a patient's own behavior as well as
providing staff with a mechanism to aid patients in utilizing
self-control.
- Psycho-educational groups and individual psychotherapy.
- Therapeutic groups that address the areas of assertiveness,
feelings, problem solving, grief resolution, life planning, stress,
self-image, social skills and recreational therapy.
- A chemical dependency group for adolescents who have been known
users of drugs/alcohol which also includes involvement in
AA/NA.
- Co-Dependency Group.
- Individual family therapy for each family.
- Multi-family educational group therapy designed to educate
families on how to achieve positive emotional involvement, manage
and complete tasks, problem solve, and establish rules for
living.
- Educational needs and priorities for each patient are assessed
and those needs are responded to through an individualized program
of instruction developed by a special education teacher.
Following completion of the Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient
Program, an appropriate referral is then made for the patient to
continue treatment in the least restrictive level of c are possible
(i.e., partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, outpatient
aftercare programs). The level of care recommended is determined by
the individual needs of the patient.
